Step 5: Set a Time Limit

It’s easy to feel defensive when it feels like you’re being forced into something without any choice. Your truth partner will naturally feel safer and perform better if, as part of your invitation to partner, you provide some choices as to when the Truth Talk will take place. This can be done by asking, “Do you want to talk now, or would you prefer to wait until after lunch?” You’re offering the person a choice, but the catch is that you wrote the options based upon what you need and want.

Offering some choices, even if they are choices limited by your own dictates, provides your truth partner with a sense of control that makes it easier to navigate through a Truth Talk.
